Dear Fink Gnome Developers


I submitted a package for the visual diff tool 'meld' for GNOME 2 via  
the submission tracker at:

As i am new to gnome it would be great if somebody of you could have a  
look at it and tell me, what needs to be improved. It validates and

Hello!
I'm having problems with GTK+2. I've installed it and
it does not work. All the programs that use it frezee
when they are executed. I've tested with nicotine (it
uses some library that needs gtk2 and a program I'm
doing with gtkglext)...
i've tried to compile gtk+2 dev and it tells me i need
to have the tiff library...  can you give me a hand
with this? could it be some problems with
dependencies?

Like I said before, I have had only a little experience in this world 
of Unix and so expect me to do things that are not correct as I try to 
figure it out before I ask for help.

I created a .xinitrc file in my home directory with two lines in it:

./sw/bin/init.sh
gnome-session

This configuration didn't work. I then changed the second line to be 
that real path of gnome and started to make improvements. When I did 
that I got the Gnome splash screen, followed shortly by an error 
screen.

The error said, "Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background 
settings may not work correctly. The Settings Daemon restarted too many 
times. The last error message was: Failed to execute 
gnome-settings-daemon: 2 (No such file or directory)..."

If there is already a string on this error, and/or how to effectively 
setup Gnome then just pointing me to it and that will be fine. Thank 
you for your time.

I am sorry. I did not search the archives for this particular error. I 
thought it would be helpful in the email. The only thing I searched for 
was trying to start Gnome. (Which is probably in the archives, I was 
just using the wrong keywords).

I am sorry to ask a question that I am sure has been asked before. I 
couldn't find the answer by searching the archives so I thought to ask 
it here.

I have been playing around with Fink for about 2 years now, but I don't 
know that much when it comes to X11. I recently installed Gnome and for 
the life of me can't get it running.

I am running a Dual 2 GHz G5 with 10.3.4 and I use Apple's X11 (I 
installed the SDK for X11 as well). I installed Fink and updated it, 
then added the unstable to my tree, and then re-updated Fink.

I installed Gnome (fink install bundle-gnome) and it installed without 
error.

I edited my xinitrc file in /etc/X11/xinit/ directory. I commented out 
the exec quartz-wm line and added exec gnome-sesssion (I also tried 
bundle-gnome and gnome-bundle).

Every time I launch X11 with any of the Gnome lines entered, it sits 
with the X11 "x" cursor for a few seconds and then Apple's X11 quits.

Also I went into Terminal and typed gnome-session and got the following 
error: "(gnome-session:14484): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:"

I am pretty sure I need to type something else with gnome-session but I 
don't remember what it is. Thanks for your help, and sorry for my 
ignorance.

Hi,

I see by the package database that gtk+2 in current-10.2-gcc3.3
(2.2.1 (unstable) and 2.0.6 (stable)) is behind current-10.3 and
even 0.7.0 (2.2.4).  May I respectfully request an update?

I'm not a heavy user/developer, but I am in a position to be a
guinea pig for at least minimal testing.  Can I help?

Also, gtk+2 still depends on freetype2, which I thought was now
deprecated because XFree86 now includes it.  I'm running XFree86
4.4.0 (installed from the binaries at XFree86.org).  Can I safely
purge freetype2 from my system?

Hi.

You may have seen the discussion a week or so ago on fink-devel about the new
policy for the BuildDependsOnly field.  (Briefly: any package which installs
headers into /sw/include should declare BuildDependsOnly to be true or
false, and "fink validate" checks this if in addition the package installs
at least one dylib.)  I wish to enforce this policy, in the case of both
headers and dylibs, for the 10.3/stable tree prior to the 0.7.1 binary
distribution.   This will mean modifying a few dozen packages in the stable
tree.

Now, as you may also be aware, I slightly jumped the gun on this and started
to add "BuildDependsOnly: True" to some packages before the new policy had
been properly discussed.  The packages which fail validation under fink 0.20.5
that I have already modified in unstable I have listed below: they include
some packages of yours.  If you believe that any of these packages should
actually have "BuildDependsOnly: False" rather than true, please contact
me about it within the next few days, and I'll make the appropriate 
modifications.  (You'll need to provide an explanation for why, which we
can put into the DescPackaging field.)

In all but one case, before I started the stable and unstable versions were 
very close, so I modified the unstable version and intend to move the new 
unstable version to stable rather soon.

(The one exception is gtk+: Alexander, is rev. 26 ready for stable?  If not,
I'll modify rev. 20 instead.)

Kenny:
  If you enable both the stable and unstable trees, you should be able to
install control-center-shlibs.

To the Fink Gnome team:
  The old version of control-center, particularly its shlibs splitoffs, 
needs to remain available to users.  I would suggest renaming the .info
file for the new version, perhaps to control-center2.info.  The alternative
is to create a package for backwards compatibility called 
control-center-shlibs.info .  But I'm afraid that if there are still things
like sawfish which depend on the old version, it's too early to give up
the headers associated to control-center-shlibs.

Hi Keith,

Some quick preliminary remarks on your latest gnome :

a) I have continuous trouble of the following type (not  
gnome2-specific):
- foo BuildDepends on bar-dev [ and maybe Depends on bar-shlibs   
(latest_vers-latest-rev) ]
- and I do take care to build foo before bar, but bar-dev does not  
Depend on "bar-shlibs (= %v-%r)"
(as it should, to make sure the symlink is not orphaned)
- Thus foo gets built with the latest vers of bar and bar-shlibs, but  
the old version of bar-dev _
i.e., with an orphaned symlink, hence the build breaks.

The 'correct' solution to this would of course be that bar-dev has a  
versioned dependency on bar-shlibs,
to ensure that its symlink is valid [ at the limit, Depends: bar-shlibs  
(= %v-%r) ].
But with fink's current dependency engine, this might be quite  
uncomfortable to the user :
fink would not automatically upgrade bar-dev when needed.

So I would think the only solution for now is to make sure that, in  
each release,
all BuildDepends point to the latest  bar-dev (ie, the current one in  
that release...)

b) I think all the following I mentioned already for previous versions :

It looks like it is trying to use the /usr/local/lib tree rather than 
the /sw/lib/ tree.
I am sending this to fink-users and fink-gnome-core, the maintainers.  
Please advise when you get this fixed.

I had removed pango1-xft2-shlibs because of a "node exists" error, and 
then when I continued my GNOME installation again, gedit tried to 
build, and failed thusly:

Well, it seems we have a bit of a problem.

Keith Conger moved mjpegtools to stable back in March; the commit message
says that it is "needed for GNOME".  Presumably, if I try to take it out
of stable, I will have to remove some gnome things as well.  I have no
idea how many, and I don't want to have to find out!

On the other hand, mjpegtools depends on libquicktime0, so that move
never should have been made without also moving libquicktime0.  But as
you point out, libquicktime0 is a bit buggy.

I moved libquicktime0 to stable after testing that it built.  But after
I moved it, I also discovered that it installs things into /sw/src, which
of course it shouldn't do.  So this package is going to need some work.

I'm trying to get ready for the 0.7.1 binary distribution.  Gnome is
turning out to be a headache here.  If some knowledgable person could
look at the set of gnome-related packages in the stable tree and figure
out what is missing and what needs fixing, it would be a great help.
