Please try to reproduce it and have a look at faubackup's error

Yes, it should.
When you are not sure: ls -l shows the link count in the second column.
This value should be above 2 for shared backup files.
If your backup really doesn't get hardlinked, then please provide
some more information (filesystems used, ls -l output of the files,
etc) so .
Perhaps your disk space problem gets solved once you solve the
one with broken backups.
