In answer to your question, currently there is no way through the admin
UI to assign items to mulitple collections, or move them, although the
data model does allow for this. This is a frequently requested feature,
and is on our 'short-list' of enhancements for the next release of
The biggest complication for items in multiple collections is the
question of access policy - which policy should apply if collections
differ? (E.g. if one collection has anonymous read, but another is more
restricted, does adding the item to the anonymous collection 'free' the
item? Should the most (or least) policy prevail, etc) The model we are
looking at now has the notion of a 'home' collection for an item, which
is the access policy authority, but to which one can (through the admin
UI) establish 'links' to other collections.
Your followup point about batch processing of assignment is a good one,
and we will feed that into the design process.
Thanks for the query/suggestion, and if you have any thoughts on how
access or any other item-in-multiple collection behavior should work,
please share them with this list or the new dspace-general@... list,
which is more policy-related than technical.
