Your efforts are greatly appreciated here, especially as I'm aware that
you are spread pretty thin at the moment!
I hadn't expected (or intended) to bug you enough to do this sort of
non-trivial change as the VT_BSTR hack in the updated SF patch worked
fine for my purposes.
I also found a workaround for the apparent memory allocation issue which
avoided the continuous creation & destruction of VARIANTs, but I'll
rerun that code in its original layout with the new VARIANT class to
see what happens.
