Not sure Vim can do fold status restoration without some hacks.
Cream's current behavior is to open the document with all folds
closed, except for the one at the current (last) position.

Good idea. (If possible.)
I've now got projects on the short term ToDo list, but it will be a
release or two before this gets implemented. (It's something I need
though, which is always motivating. :)
