[Boa Constr] Setting up sizers in 0.2.6

First, fair warning I am a newbie to using boa constructor.  I just got 
started and I see how to use the designer to add standard widgets but I 
can not seem to figure out how to use the sizer tools.

I have deciphered that sizers have to be added to the "Sizers" window 
pane instead of the designer window.  But once I have a new sizer object 
I don't see how to add objects to the sizer.

I know this is a very new feature, but is there any pre-release 
documentation anywhere that I can look at?

[Boa Constr] global name 'string' not defined

Hi

Silly question - I've just download boa 0.2.0 from sf and tried running 
it by double clicking boa.py and it comes up with a messagebox saying

	global name 'string' not defined

What's the cause of the problem?

I'm using python2.3 and wxPython2.4

Sashan, try getting Boa 0.2.3-alpha instead, or even 0.2.6 from CVS.

Riaan,

The link on http://boa-constructor.sourceforge.net/Download.html still points 
to the 0.2.0 release.  It might be good if that was changed asap, 
particularly since Boa was the August sf project of the month.

By the way, congrats on that.

[Boa Constr] How to use new sizers in Designer?

Could someone briefly explain how to use the new sizers.  I click the
wxBoxSizer button on the palette, and click in the Frame designer window
and get "This component must be created in the Sizer view."  I cannot
find a sizer view anywhere.

I've coded sizers before manually.

[Boa Constr] Boa and linux once again

I seem to have the same problem as Martin Hickling.  When I try to run a new application under linux as per the tutorial, I get the message  'Cannot load PNG files'.

PNG images work fine with the wxPython demo and a quick run through the Boa png's with 'display' comes through clean.

I'm running Slackware 9.0, Python 2.3, wxPythonSrc-2.4.1.2, and boa-constructor 0.2.3.

Any ideas?

In Martin's case his Boa doesn't start up, in your case it
sounds like Boa works but a Boa application gives the error.
Is this the case?

The line wxInitAllImageHandlers() in the generated code
is supposed to install PNG handlers, more I cannot do.

And run it, does it also give the error?

Hopefully somehow you're just missing a wxInitAllImageHandlers.

Thanks for the insight Riaan.  I must apologize, I must have been dreaming in technicolour that day and I reported the wrong error message.  Here is a cut and paste from the error window.

Gdk-ERROR **: BadDrawable (invalid Pixmap or Window parameter)
  serial 181 error_code 9 request_code 14 minor_code 0

And yes, the notepad example runs fine.  It's just that a new application as supplied by boa gives me this message.  On my dual-boot machine, boa works perfectly under XP.

Boa tries to emulate a standard Python shell.

It might be an idea to automatically add the directory of

(Bookmarks used to be called Workspace ages ago ;)

zero is quite irritating though.

I think I found the problem.

Some background info; Because wxWindows changes it's coordinate system
when controls like menubars, status bars and toolbars are connected to
a frame I need to disconnect these controls when the frame is
closed in order to read accurate coordinate info from other controls
when the source code is generated.

Some time ago I patched the code to not disconnect the menubar under
wxGTK (because it always caused a core dump). This caused the
incorrect frame size.

I just tested and it seems to be safe to disconnect the menubar
under the latest version of wxPython/wxGTK.

You can fix the code in your copy, in:
Companions.FrameCompanions.FrameDTC.updatePosAndSize, just replace

         if wxPlatform != '__WXGTK__':
             self.control.SetMenuBar(None)

with

         self.control.SetMenuBar(None)

[Boa Constr] Couple of bugs in Linux version

Hi there.

Running 0.6.0.. very happy on WinXP but in Debian Linux, I have a few more 
problems: On the Frame Designer, when moving objects around, they jump all 
over the frame and do not follow the mouse properly. This makes accurate 
placement very difficult. Also on the Frame Designer, in my current project, 
the values for wxframesize and self.SetClientSize have become out of synch in 
the y axis. Not quite sure why, but when reopening the Frame Designer, each 
time I reopen it the frame gets smaller. It doesn't have this effect in 
Windows though.

Yes, I know about this issue and will try to find workarounds before the
next update. The problem is that some controls report mouse event
positions completely differently under wxMSW and wxGTK. A huge pain :(

I would recommend Python 2.3, wxPython 2.4.0.7 and either Boa 0.2.3 or 
Boa 0.2.6. Other combinations work too and Boa will give you an error
message if the wxPython version is too low.

There are a few bugs in the wxStyledTextCtrl in wxPython 2.4.1.2.

Ok, so expat is encountering an unknown encoding upon parsing
the response from your Zope server.

Can you try to determine the encoding that the server uses?

Also, you may put a try except block around the above line
and write 'data' to a file, to see exactly what is causing
the problem.

Maybe I don't set correctly all the information for the zope node in the 
inspector. I left like path the default /. What should I put to local path?

The tutorial is a bit out of date.  Go to the Containers/Layout tab.  The
StatusBar icon is the eigth from the left.

The tutorial section for the menu's is also not correct.

Yes, the tutorial is slightly out of date, those objects
are now available from the Containers/Layout page.

Please look around for the functionality in Boa if there
are other discrepancies.

Kevin Light is updating the tutorial and I hope we'll have
a nice updated tutorial for the next release.

Not really a Boa spesific question and the answer depends on your
application.

In Boa I usually use Python's ConfigParser, but I also use wxFileConfig
for staring wxStyledTextCtrl settings.

In Boa I have a helper function that returns a config object.
This function assures that, no matter which code calls the helper,
the same config object is returned for a filename.
This was needed to prevent multiple config objects being out of sync.

If your config is centralised in the main frame or other objects
will access your config from the main frame, that is fine.
