All BitPim does on detected devices is call open followed by close.
On Linux this sort of thing happened due to a kernel bug and was
followed by a kernel panic.  You might want to uninstall all drivers
except the one for the cable and then see what happens.

Modem is definitely the wrong interface to be talking to.  Also
BitPim 0.62 doesn't support the VX6000 anyway.

Try the most recent test release of BitPim 0.7.

The software can't tell the phone to do anything.  I can't even overwrite
the files the preferences are stored in (if I could I would be able to
turn off the stupid light while charging).

BitPim and the phone both store calendar time information as 24 hour
values.  Both present the user interface in 12 hour am/pm style.
If you tweaked two or three lines of code, BitPim could present the
interface in 24 hour.

Analog mode works for me.  I think it is the last phone Verizon will
sell with analog.  There is also talk in another forum about how
it is disappearing from Verizon's page of available phones (varies
by zipcode).

The user interface is somewhat frustrating and there are several minor
annoyances (which are major for others).  To a certain extent it is 
very good for a 1.0 product.

The software can't tell the phone to do anything.  I can't even

No you can't change the phone UI through that menu nor can
you change the bitpim UI through that menu.

I got this while  I was trying download some pics from my vx6000. It just started happening I tried disconnecting and rebooting the phone and bitpim. It has happened the last 4 or 5 times I tried to get the pics. 

An unexpected exception has occurred.

That is one of the standard images and works fine for me.

I am just completing some code that verifies the checksums
in data coming back from the phone.  It also more explicitly
logs any issues with the data (occasionally there is junk
at the begining etc).  If something like that is happening
there will now be log messages (and exceptions if appropriate).
It is in CVS now, or you will need to wait till 0.7test3 (due
next weekend).

I also added in code that prints the speed of file transfers.
On the VX6000 I get 4kb/sec writing and 20-25kb/sec reading.
(The theoretical limit of USB is around 1400kb/sec with most
real world maximums being 2/3rds of that.  Obviously the
phone is the bottleneck).

The BitPim VX-4400 help notes say:
"The phone requires that each entry have at least one phone number.
Entries without at lest one number will be ignored and not written
to the phone."
 
However, in reality I can create an entry on the phone that does not
have a
phone number, just an e-mail address, and BitPim reads that just fine.

The sync protocol gets very upset if there is no number.

And how do you create an entry with no number?  You have to enter a
number to create an entry.  If you then try and remove the number
then the phone says you can't remove the default number.

On the VX6000 you have to have either a number or an email.  On the 4400
you have to have at least one number.

On the 4400 I received an incoming text message.
When I read the message, I then have the option to
save the address of the sender. At that point
I can add it to an existing phonebook entry,
or create a new one.

any non-digits will be removed.
Yet, on my phone I have embedded "T" and "#" characters
in some entries, specifically VM. BitPim read these
from the phone ok, is it going to drop them on the upload?

  You need to get the kernel extension (drivers) for the chipset that is 
used in that particular cable. The system does not contain any that 
match it.
