It looks as though a bug was introduced when the choice of sample format was
added in Preferences, because version 1.0.0 works ok (in 16-bit).
Judging from the experiences of those who have reported the problem, it
seems to be independent of hardware used, and also OS, but I don't know
about the Mac version. Anyway, hopefully the next release should be ok.
