Would it help if we try and isolate in exactly what kernel the breakage
happened? 

Daniel: can you post your script? I've been manually running it, but
sound cuts out too often to keep doing that. ;(

I can't explain you why, but now I also see this problem, and I have a
fix for it which I will send out later today. You could be of great help
by testing it :)

Hi,

I have the following problem and would need help debugging / resolving 
it - I think it should be a bug (and not a feature ;):

- The sound is working fine when I plug a headphone, but I cannot get 
the sound come through the built-in speakers of my notebook.
- The speakers do work though (as the sound works as expected 
(loudspeakers and headphone plug) under Windows).

- The sound also already had previously worked fine under Linux until 
quite some time ago.

I let some time pass, because I thought, I would probably not be the 
only one to notice and complain, but its too long now + not to have my 
speakers under Linux is quite annoying :/

Maybe its me... but I tried all the things I could think of multiple 
times (alsamixer, insmod parameters, plug unplug headphone, 
dmesg+syslog, many different applications to play sound ...).

I included the above link to my alsa-info, please let me know if you 
need anything else.

I hope someone can help me to understand why it is not working (aka 
locate the problem (userland/kernel)) and to possibly fix it (or find 
someone who can fix it ;).

Thanks a lot for any information that might lead to me getting my sound 
back :)

I figured the internal chip on my mobo is indeed fried.. with the new 
card I only get sound out of the right channel.. if I gain the left 
channel in alsamixer I can still here the noise floor rising so it 
shouldn't be another fauly chip. I've tried to remove my .asoundrc and 
/var/lib/alsa/asound without luck. When I start it with jack it's the 
same thing, and I can also only see 2 outputs even tho it's a 7.1 
channel device. But that's not all catastrophic as I only use 2 channels 
anyway.. but it probably have something to do with the main issue.

It's a cheapo 7.1 pci card from logilink with some VIA chip.

I already recompiled my kernel and completely disabled OSS, hand
edited /etc/asound.conf a dozen times, and even got mpd and my own
media player sharing the sound card (thanks to dmix, because they have
different UIDs)

But for some reason, flash won't listen to the config.

I'm on kernel version 3.3.8
Alsa-lib version: media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.25-r1
distro: gentoo

Google taught me how to edit my /etc/asound.conf to get dmix going,
which solved two processes with different UIDs wanting to use the
sound card at the same time.

Is this a problem with flash or do I have a messed up config?

Again starting this thread.

As stated above the underrun problem still remains. Apart from above
problem my video and sound going out of sync.

I am using maiplayer to play video on my device. When I start my device the
sound start with distortion along with the video but is sync with video but
when it switch to another video the video and sound get out of sync.

I've rewritten my device definition as follows:

However, the dmix:0 device doesn't seem to be able to share the hardware either! I still have to wait about 5 seconds for the "default" device to release the hardware in order to avoid this error:

Isn't the dmix device supposed to be sharable? Or am I misunderstanding what the dmix plugin is supposed to do? I was expecting the following to play the same WAV file twice, simultaneously:

$ aplay -Dplug:51to21 receive.wav & aplay receive.wav

However, it actually serialises them both instead.

The model parameter should not be necessary.

After loading the driver, are there any error messages in the system log
(/var/log/messages or the output of dmesg)?

Hi All:

First time user here so please bear with me if I post incomplete
information.
kernel = 3.2.0-27-generic
Processor = Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2100 CPU @ 3.10GHz
video = gt430
mythbuntu = .25 latest fixes
alsa = 1.0.25
nvidia driver = 295.40

What works over hdmi.

mythtv, everything.
vlc, no problem.

Here is what partially works.
xbmc.  any movie that is encoded in 5.1 or above.  stereo, no sound, mp3,
no sound

Never works.  firefox, chrome, any flash videos, no sound.

All the above things that do work, work if I set them up to use card 1,
device 7.

this is my asound.conf.

  pcm.!default {
      type hw
      card 1
      device 7
}

Any varaition of speaker-test produces no sound.
example= speaker-test -Dhw:1,7 -c6 -r192000
no sound.

Can anyone please explain to my why I cannot get hdmi sound to work over
flash, speaker-test, or internet?
