Advanced Linux Sound Architecture

Hi,

I've been struggling for the last two days to make my multiface 1 work
with the cardbus, without any success... Any kind of help would be
greatly appreciated !

Here is my situation :

Brand new Ubuntu Studio, the card work on the pci bridge, but not on my
laptop using the cardbus bridge. Here is what  get when trying to load
the firmware :

I've recompile the alsa drivers and libs from source, same thing, can't
upload the firmware to the card.

alsa-firmware and alsa-firware-loaders 1.0.14 - installed

... that does. He should be getting white noise due to aplay interpreting 
that MP3 that it doesn't understand as a stream of raw U8, 8000 Hz, mono 
samples. That is -- aplay doesn't do .mp3. Try a .wav.

However, since the symptom is not consistent with the above, the problem's 
probably something else. I have no experience with emu10k1, but if noone 
gets you a better/more specific answer, try making the user boot while 
specifying "pci=noacpi" as a kernel parameter -- perhaps it's some weirdo 
IRQ routing problem.

I am once again, hoping to build a system that will support recording
multiple input streams from two or more soundcards.

Has anyone implemented more than one PCI soundcard, for recording
purposes?

If so, would you tell me what distro you are using, and what
soundcards?

"aplay --help" does tell that it can support many sound file formats... and
namely in this huge list, MPEG.
after this, however, it says that some of these formats may not be available
for my hardware.

imagine some SB cards have included support for mp3, then I guess aplay can
play MP3 on these. only on these.
I am relly not sure, but if the user I m trying to help can hear sound, I am
sure it can hear sound and that the mp3 has been decoded with a correct
algorithm.

I will follow your advice with the noapci paramet for kernel. that's a
possibility.
however if the problem was IRQ related, how can I detect this with classical
linux commands ?

Hello all,
    I have a inspiron 8600 laptop running Debian, the sound has always 
worked but yesterday I was messing with hooking it up to my TV plus 
trying to figure out if I could use my digital out.  The sound was 
working but I wanted to try running a program in windows so I booted up 
vista.  After having a odd problem of the sound playing VERY low,  I 
rebooted back to Linux.  The problem I was having in windows was in 
Linux as well!  I can`t seem to get sound out of my laptop but if I turn 
everything all the way up and plug in my amp to the headphone port and 
turn my amp up to full amidst the static I can hear what I am trying to 
play.  Anyone have a idea on what this could be?  I have tried 
alsaconfig and init.d/alsa reload.  I have also tried getting sound to 
work in windows vista but can`t seem to get anything more then in Linux.

alsamixer says:
Sound card is Intel 82801DB-ICH4 
Chip is SigmaTel STA9750,51 

Everything reacts as it should and the input (internal mic and external 
mic) still work at normal sound levels.

I am on the #alsa chan on freenode (as Gokee2) and will be intently 
watching the mailing list.
