I receive error message  when I use
%left shift
\kernm2ex{1}
%right shift
\kern2ex{1}
%lowering
\lower2pt\hbox{something}
%raising
\raise2pt\hbox{5}.
The error message is 'they can not be used in vertical mode.' Could you be more specific how can I move a page number with them. Thanks,
