Hmm.
Now I'm about to beat my head into the monitor.

Internet --> ASSP (192.168.0.100 port 25) configured with SMTP Destination 192.168.0.105, Listen Port 25, Relay Port 125
MailEnable is set to listen for smtp on 125
Exchange is 192.168.0.105 and set to smarthost to 192.168.0.100 port 125

Is mail enable configured wrong? The only thing I see in the config is to set smtp port and the ip to listen on.

I know I'm just not seeing something that I should be. I must be in the wrong frame of mind today.

thanks!

Your flow should be something like this:

Internet -->ASSP (25)-->MailEnable (125)-->Exchange (25)

Exchange-->ASSP(25)-->MailEnable (125)-->Internet

I think you'd be fine if you just fix your outbound mail path.

Thanks for the reply.
Here's my setup and what I'm seeing.

Internet --> ASSP (25) *BOX A*--> MailEnable *BOX A* --> Exchange *BOX B*
Exchange *BOX B* -- Mailenable *BOX A* --> Internet

I think I'm confusesd as to the meaning of what the different config options means.
I set Exchange to smarthost to the BOX A port 125, but I noticed that MailEnable is set to listen to SMTP on port 125.
Is this why ASSP is being bypassed?
Should I tell ASSP to that the relay port is 225, tell Exchange to smarthost to 225 on BOX A ?

My assumption is that ASSP passes the mail to the mail server, correct? So if the relay port is set to port 12345 and Ecxchange is tols to smarthost to port 12345, then ASSP should get the email, whitelist and pass it to Mailenable to be sent out?

Yes? No? Am I just not seeing what is right in front of my nose? :)

thanks!!!!

I've always had the best success if ASSP is always sending the mail to the same SMTP destination.  Perhaps some of the newer versions can handle things differently.

So, I have the following for a mail path.

Internet->ASSP(port 25)->AVScanner(port 225)->Exchange
Exchange->ASSP(port25)->AVScanner(port 225)->Internet

Notes:
Exchange is setup to send mail to ASSP as a smarthost.
The ONLY reason I use port 225 for the AVScanner is that it is on the same server as Exchange.
ASSP ALWAYS sends mail to AVScanner port 225
AVScanner is responsible for determining if the mail gets routed to Exchange, or out to the internet.
ASSP already blocks relays, so I don't worry about someone relaying through AVCenter.

There may be other ways, but this is what works for me.
To set things up this way, you don't need to use the Relay Host or Relay Port fields, but Mail Enable must be configured to route internal mail to Exchange, and external mail out to the Internet (to the appropriate MX for the destination).

To translate this into your setup, I think it would look like this (with 127.0.0.1:125 in the SMTP Destination field of ASSP).

Internet->ASSP (port 25)->Mail Enable(port 125)->Exchange
Exchange->ASSP (port 25)->Mail Enable(port 125)->Internet

Thanks.
I understand that concept and that's how I have it setup, but I think my configuration for Mail Enable (smtp server) and ASSP is wrong.
I was trying to determine how ASSP talks to the mail server.
Currently I have assp listen port as 25.
SMTP destination is Exchange Server port 25
Relay Port is 125

I have the Mail Enable mail server on the ASSP box, smtp port accepting on 125
I have Exchange smart host pointing to ASSP port 125

Did I miss something or configure something wrong?

thanks!!!

Depending upon your version of Exchange (the location of the screen is different) just set your Exchange server to deliver to a smart host (the IP address of  ASSP).  However it is important to remember that ASSP won't send mail, itself.  Once Exchange forwards the mail to ASSP for whitelisting purposes,etc, ASSP processes the mail and then forwards it to an SMTP mail server for deliver.  This can be the SMTP server from Microsoft or any other mail server.

Your outbound mail should look similar to this.

Client-->Exchange-->ASSP-->SMTP Server-->Firewall/router-->Internet

The following won't work:
Client-->Exchange-->ASSP-->Firewall/router-->Internet
unless in this scenario Internet represents the IP address of your ISP mail server.

Subject: [Assp-user] Assp relay?

Hello,

I am trying to setup an ASSP relay box.
It will be on it's own box, accepting email from the outside and relaying it to and Exchange box.
I think I have it setup correctly, but I can't tell if the Exchange box is sending outgoing email through the ASSP box.

Has anyone done this and are there any examples anywhere?
All I've been able to find are examples of ASSP and Exchange on the same box.

thanks!
