If you love open source and have some extra time on your hands, why not consider volunteering to help out one of the projects hosted on SourceForge? You don’t need mad developer skills to pitch in, most projects will welcome volunteers with all levels of experience.
Even if you no coding skills at all, don’t let that stop you from finding a way to lend a hand because there’s always something that needs to get done. Project leads will help match your skills and interests to their todo list and you could end up doing anything from testing an app for bugs to touching up artwork and logos.
Here are a few projects looking for volunteers right now:
Ikasan is a Java-based middleware platform that was recently open sourced by a banking institution and needs Java developers to help take the project to the next level.
SourceForge community member wek21 is looking for people with Qt or KDE-related programming skills to help put together a desktop applet for Plasma that notifies users when friends update their social networking sites.
Graphic artists might want to hit up isaque to help create artwork for the task manager project, Coyote.
There are a bunch of things to do over at the auction script project WeBid, including help finishing the payment system and “making the front end less ugly.”
Twincling, a repository of open source software developed by an India-based technology company, is looking for PHP programmers to work on two projects; -dmod and -scano.
You can always find the latest volunteer help wanted ads on our forums.
The Silex team also needs help!

I am looking for help with WikiDesign, a new kind of Wiki that structures user submitted content into the logical framework that is generally accepted by the International Council on Systems Engineering for defining system architectures. Such a site would allow an individual with a great idea for a new physical product to draw upon the domain knowledge of those on the internet to flesh out the smaller details of the project to create a manageable package of system definition that could be taken to a manufacturer for production.
Initially, the user who starts a new project in WikiDesign is asked a series of questions that enables the system to suggest custom editable boilerplate top level functional and physical breakdowns, system requirement documents (headings only) and stakeholder lists.
I have a Certificate in Space Systems Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, and currently work as a NASA contractor in Houston on the Space Station Program. I recognize the huge amount of knowledge that engineers over the years have build up, yet space system design progeams are costly, and often reinvent technologies that have already been developed but the knowlege sits in retired or layed off workers with no way to contribute, despite an interest, competancy, and desire.
WikiDesign is a tool with broad applicability, that will raise global awareness and reduce development costs of any technology that has a wiki in WikiDesign.
My project seeks to leverage the collective knowledge of disparate contributors with narrow domain knowledge so that it can be assembled into a disciplined structure that can be used for development of physical products in the real world.
