Update: “Other” and “Unknown”

After posting yesterday’s article, a number of people commented that the number of ‘Other’ and ‘Unknown’ is so high as to make the stats not useful. So I did a little extra digging.

Turns out that this number primarily represents non-browser downloads. That is, this growing number represents the auto-update features of various products which download the latest release without the user having to visit the website with an actual browser. This number continues to grow, as more and more products incorporate this functionality, and software users expect their software to update itself without much effort on their part.
