As we wave goodbye to what’s left of 2010, we also wrap up our months-long look at projects that have been with us for 10 years or more. The final project we’re highlighting this year is Snort, an open source network intrusion prevention and detection system (IDS/IPS) developed by Sourcefire.
“Snort was originally written to be a just a plain sniffer with different formatting than what tcpdump provided at the time, however, over the years, it has taken on the roll of being an IDS/IPS. It is focused towards network security personnel and anyone interested in the network traffic that is crossing their network,” says Joel Esler, Senior Security Consultant at Sourcefire.
You’ll definitely want to read up on this project to see what makes it so successful and where it’s headed. Oh, and Snort is looking to fill some developer positions so be sure to check that out if your in the job market.
As we count down to the new year, take a minute to peruse past Projects of the Month we’ve showcased this year to find out which developers want a new pony, which one recommends forgetting about everything but writing good code, and which one is anything but LAME. What project-y goodness do we have in store for you next year? Guess you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out.
