Indie Game of the Year

Filed under: News — qreeves @ 2:24 pm

From the Blood Frontier Team: Anthony Cord, Quinton Reeves, and Lee Salzman

It’s time for the ModDB 2009 “Game of the Year” awards, and Blood Frontier has come a long way since the days of our early alphas back in 2008. While at this point in our development cycle, it is hard to expect to win such an event, it provides a great platform for you to show your appreciation and love for this project we’ve all worked to create. Voting for us will not only help Blood Frontier become more popular, but with that popularity will come more players, and perhaps more development opportunities to bring you a better game.

So, what are you waiting for? Head on over to our page on ModDB, scroll down a little, and hit the pretty “Vote for Game” button. Anyone can vote, and it takes only a moment of your time.

The Rules: The following are basic rules which apply to all participating teams.

  • All active mods and indie games will show a “voting area” in their profile.
  • The top 100 is determined by “quality” of vote. For example a vote from a long time member is worth more than a new members vote which is again worth more than a guests vote.
  • In phase 1, all visitors of Mod DB can nominate as many mods as they want to appear in the top 100.
  • In phase 2, all visitors get to pick their top 3 mods and games from the top 100 list.
  • Any mod / indie game can make the top 100 except for mods / indie games released in previous years which have not released a significant update in 2009.
  • No mod / indie game can win in the same category twice. Eg. a mod cannot win “best unreleased” two years in a row, only a honorable mention will be given in this situation.
  • Exceptions to the above rule maybe granted on request by the Mod DB. Eg. if your mod moves from v1 to v2 and it is a total overhaul, we reserve the right to make it eligible again.
  • Any attempt to game the system and falsely inflate your vote count will result in an immediate disqualification. We will be analyzing all votes and will contact mod teams if we detect suspicious activity.
  • Prize distribution will be controlled by Mod DB. All decisions in this regard are final.
  • All mod / indie games must have an active contact as the profile leader who updates their profile on a regular basis to be eligible.
  • Read on for the full legal terms.

We’re looking for a new original weapon to include in Blood Frontier, and we’re opening up to the public the ability to suggest the next big thing!

Rules
All submissions must:

  • Be fully complete; provide a full idea only- include diagrams, mock-ups, and model concepts if possible.
  • Be fully described; every single mechanic must be included- does it bounce, explode, drop, float.
  • Be original works; weapons may not resemble another weapon or have a similar mechanic
  • Be either defined as a loadout, super, or distributed weapon; loadouts are what players will be able to select as their starting weapon, super weapons like the grenade, respawn more frequently but can’t reload

Blood Frontier “Beta 2″ Out Now!

Filed under: News — qreeves @ 6:51 am

EmblemFrom the Blood Frontier Team: Anthony Cord, Quinton Reeves, and Lee Salzman

After many months of development, and massive amounts of input from the public, we are proud to present you with the new release of Blood Frontier, v0.85 (Beta 2). This new version totally redefines and improves the game in many ways, creating a whole new style that makes it almost nothing like its predecessor.

We hope that you enjoy this new release, which contains more bug fixes, feature additions, and improvements, than I could ever list. The previous “Beta 1″ package saw us gain a huge increase in contributors and players, which has in turn afforded us more resources to create a better polished Blood Frontier.

Video effects courtesy of Animoto: The end of all slideshows! Blood Frontier was kindly given an all access pass during their “Animoto for a Cause” promotion; thanks guys!

New improvements include:

  • Enhancements to the impulsing (double jump) system; sprint for more speed, run along walls, or kick off them.
  • Fun new secondary fire modes for all weapons; stick grenades to walls, or liquefy your enemies with a big blue ball of death.
  • New and improved maps from the community; enjoy a wider range of playing environments and settings.
  • Refined and increased HUD visibility; always know what’s happening and what you’re looking at.
  • More variables than ever; tailor gameplay to your tastes with more options than you could ever play with.
  • Story mode concept; take the precursor to coop campaigns out for a spin with bots or online.
  • Refinements and polish; gameplay flows easier, visual elements look better.

Special thanks go out to those who enjoyed the game enough to come and offer their help, you should all know that it is very much appreciated; without the advice and opinions you offer, Blood Frontier would not be nearly half as polished as it feels now. Be sure to pop by our chat and leave your own feedback!

Don’t forget to spread the word, invite your friends, have fun, and maybe even donate a little to help us keep the project going. Without you we would not exist today.

Blood Frontier “Beta 1″ Officially Released!

From the Blood Frontier Team: Anthony Cord, Quinton Reeves, and Lee Salzman

As some of you may already know, about a month ago we were mentioned on Slashdot. While this was a great achievement for us, it came a little bit too early for our Beta 1 release, nevertheless both Eihrul and I stayed up all night working on putting together a release candidate so that there was something for the interested parties to have a look at – and the response we got  was phenomenal.

We have had alot of new faces since that day, with many well wishes, expressions of amazement and gratitude; which has touched our hearts. We have worked long and hard to make this release the best Blood Frontier yet, and looking to the future it can only get better! So here it is, for the whole world to try out – the official Blood Frontier “Beta 1″ release.

Compared to our last release, “Alpha 2″, the game has taken a dramatic turn from the slow and clunky “thirdperson” shooter it was. Based on feedback from the community (which we take very seriously, and no idea is too big or too small) we refined, polished, and extended our gameplay to what we consider to be the most fun Free and Open Source First Person Shooter out there on the net. Many may think that it does not compare visually with some of the other shooters out there, but what we lack in art we more than make up for in gameplay.

So, give it a try, play against our new and improved Artificial Intelligence, which is giving even the most seasoned of players a run for their money now; or hop on our master server at play.bloodfrontier.com where there is usually someone either playing, or watching from our IRC channel in #bloodfrontier on irc.freenode.net (yes that is right, IRC chat support built right in!). The people are friendly and helpful, so if you have any problems just press “T” and chat to them :o)

So, you may be asking yourself at this point; what is so good about this release? Let me give you a run down on what is new and improved!

  • Improved Artificial Intelligence. We’ve put alot of work into making the bots alot more useful in matches; they balance teams for you, defend you and your flags, attack your enemies, and exhibit different behaviours depending on their wide range of skill levels. Should you think they’re just not mean enough (and they are mean) try your hand at the superbots by setting botminskill to 101 and prepare to be slaughtered!
  • Cool weapons and effects. The arsenal at your disposal has been expanded and improved significantly; try your hand with the new Laser Rifle, lob a Grenade and watch the firey debris fly around, or stare in wonder as the pellets from your gun ricochet about damaging you and your enemies. Our weapons are designed with satisfaction and fun in mind!
  • Ragdolls! New from Cube Engine 2, the Lead Programmer Eihrul has kindly backported his awesome new ragdoll effects; making fragging look all the more beautiful and exciting!
  • New maps, sounds, and artwork. We’ve gained quite a few new developers on the project recently, many of whom work professionally in their field. Our game now has a catchy new tune, maps have more ambience than ever, and our list of maps has been reworked and expanded slightly. In addition, we have a cool new Laser Rifle which really makes you feel powerful and in the game.
  • Extended game and environment controls. Mappers now have access to a wide variety of variables to fine tune every aspect of their environment – from gravity and speed down to the friction, allowing more immersive and varied environments than ever before. Entity linking has been improved and triggers have been integrated into the online system – meaning when you step in front of a door – it will open, whether you are online or offline! This is all not to mention the wide array of variables available to players themselves, from “kamikaze 3″ to “botminskill 101″ to “spawnweapon 6″ – play the game how you want to play it, and fun fun while doing so!
  • Polish, polish, polish. The interface and gameplay has been refined to a tee; know exactly what to do and what is happening at any given moment. Move with expert precision with our “look and press jump” impulsing system, which lets you move around at much faster speeds in any direction you want – even sideways or up – and no longer feel like you’re floating in thick goop, the gravity is the same but the player’s weight has been tweaked so you feel like you can actually play (and androids are heavy anyway, right?).
  • Much, much, much more.

Well, what are you waiting for? Download, Learn More, Get Help, or Join In today! Have fun with our awesome project, we definitely have a lot ourselves making it – Coming up next: Campaigns and Missions!

- The Blood Frontier Team

P.S. We need your HELP to keep making this game as awesome as possible; the Lead Developer (myself), Quinton “Quin” Reeves toils away for up to 18 hours a day, every day, working on the project. He has been struggling with ancient hardware for a long time due to financial difficulties. Please DONATE to make sure he can keep doing this important job! People “Digg” Blood Frontier

Filed under: News — qreeves @ 7:10 pm

phoronix.com — Blood Frontier is based upon the Sauerbraten engine and takes advantage of the features like a 6-direction height field world model, real-time map editing, light-maps, shader-based lighting effects, integrated physics support, and a particle engine. Like Cube and Cube 2, Blood Frontier uses OpenGL and SDL, which makes it multi-platform friendly.

Blood Frontier mentioned on Slashdot

Filed under: News — qreeves @ 5:27 pm

Softhaus writes “The guys at Blood Frontier have been busy for the last two years working on a new FPS called (surprise) Blood Frontier . This game is an enhanced Cube 2 engine with original artwork and new gameplay (including a kid-mode, which optionally turns off the blood — a nice option for a change). Add the new paintball mode and you have a real ‘game community’ here. The code is all there (complete for you to play with), the team listens to feedback from the community, and the game is great! It’s nice to see these talented guys showing a true free software attitude. They’ve mentioned that the first actual release is scheduled for next Friday. Does anyone know of other great open source games that are truly ‘open?’”
