Texture parts and formats of a car skin

If you create a car skin for a player or a human car you have to care about:

  • Player car skin (see example above too):
    • Size 2048 x 2048px with baked shadows (with Blender) in PNG format
    • Named as the folder and XML file of the car: carclass-vendor-car.png
    • You can create up to 3 car skin styles, street version, tuning/ fany one and a race/ rally car skin, naming of them is: carclass-vendor-car-style.png
  • The wheel texture:
    • In PNG format sized to 1024 x 512px named as wheel3d.png for standard skin or wheel3d-style.png
    • There are various rim and tyre styles available at SVN
  • A preview images as a JPG image in 800 x 500px; carclass-vendor-car-preview.jpg or carclass-vendor-car-style-preview.jpg
  • A RPM meter as a PNG image in 256 x 256px: carclass-vendor-car-rpm.png
  • A speedometer as a PNG image in 256 x 256px: carclass-vendor-car-speed.png
  • Extra skin parts for:
    • Driver: driver-carclass-vendor-car.png; 512 x 256px
    • Interior: carclass-vendor-car-int.png; 512 x 256px
  • Hints for a great gaming experience
    • Variate your skins: street version, tuning/ fany one and a race/ rally car skin have always different details
    • Make an research on Google images search, Flickr and Deviantart to explore the details
    • Keep an eye not to violate the Free Art license by mixing licenses that are not compatible (as an example Free Art license did not work with Public Domain license)
    • Make sure rim and tyre fits to car skin style, as an example: a race car skin should not use street car tyres
    • At SVN you find various car vendor logos - use them!
    • Meshes with transparent textures should have the name prefix "WI_", example: WI_glass.
    • If the car has AI drivers (robots), create an own skin for them too.

Create AI drivers (robots) skins too:

  • Robot skins are located at speed-dreams-2/drivers and its subfolders
  • A car skin as for the player skin
  • A wheel texture fitting to the skin similar described above for the player skin
  • A preview image sin JPG format
  • A Pit wall logo:
    • In Silicon Graphics image format (*.rgb) sized to 512 x 512 px
    • Use this GIMP template: pit-door-robots.xcf.bz2
    • Make sure your design leaves one pixel empty around
