One of the major services that SourceForge.net offers is the ability for users to download files which have been released by the project through our File Release System (FRS). To serve these files to the user, SourceForge.net maintains a geographically-distributed network of mirror servers, which receive copies of the files and dispense them to users. Since mirror servers are located throughout the world, users can pick a server which is physically close to them and receive great transfer speeds.
- Server failure or slow downloading: If you get an error downloading from a mirror or it is too slow, you can override the mirror selection for the current download via the 'Select a different mirror?' link. Click on the arrow images to expand a locale that is near to you, select a different mirror name from the list, and press 'OK'. This selection will remain in effect for any other downloads that you do during your current browsing session.
- Poor mirror selection: If the geographical locator doesn't pick a mirror that is nearby for you, you can choose a default mirror for all your future downloads.
- General failure: If you can't get a download to start, you may have some software on your computer that is interfering with the download process. Some ad blockers and download managers have been incompatible with the download pages. Please turn off any software such as this to figure out if it is the cause of the download problem.
Customizing your download mirror setup
If you wish to change the download mirror to be used for all your SourceForge.net downloads, you can set a default mirror on your account preferences page using the 'Change default mirror' link (you will need to be logged into your SourceForge.net account).
Clicking the 'Change default mirror' link will bring up a selection dialog that shows you the mirror choices that are available, grouped into geographical locations. Click on the arrow images to expand or contract a group of mirrors for a certain locale. Then, simply select the mirror you want to make the default by clicking on it and pressing the 'OK' button.
Should you want to go back to having the geographical locator choose a mirror for you, choose the 'Auto-select' choice at the bottom of the list of mirrors.
You don't need to set a default mirror to solve a temporary download problem. There is a 'Select a different mirror?' link on each download page that lets you choose a different mirror for the current download. This temporary selection will also affect any other downloads you make during your current browsing session.
