Markdown usage in forum

Copy and paste from a discussion with Jonathan Wigglesworth.
Look at this example:
Formating of the first post is on 1 line. But the email I received with this text was with multiple lines (easier to read).
The email was what the user wanted. The website content is not what the user wanted.
Markdown needs " " (double space) at the end of a line for a carriage return. But for 99.99% of people a carriage return in input is for a carriage return in output, they do NOT understand that a carriage return in input is nothing in output.
Another example, your signature is
Do you imagine to write:
Best, (space) (space)
Jonathan Wigglesworth (space) (space)
SourceForge Support (space) (space)
Not very natural, is it?
So users fill a post with carriage return, and wonder why their carriage return is not handled.
Some users add double carriage return:
to avoid this reaction. They never think to add double space! (they don't like to read all the markdown "how to" to understand how to put a simple carriage return...)
Be able to put some formatting in forums is a great idea, using not adapted formating is not a great idea.
