Welcome to Pools of Virtual Boxes

Pools of Virtual Boxes (POVB) is focused on creating Linux-based VirtualBox virtual machines to deploy Condor pools in an Windows environment. The goals of the project are to:

  • Create a system that is simple to deploy by Windows administrators;
  • Enable academic researchers using Linux to access idle Windows cycles via Condor;
  • Create an easily extensible Linux platform containing typical research computing codes.

The published code is a bootstrapping system for creating a Linux image pre-loaded with commonly needed research computing software and Condor. The result of bootstrapping is an installation script for VirtualBox, the Linux image and Windows services for running VirtualBox in the background on the Windows machine. For more information on the bootstrap process, see our bootstrapping guide. Currently, CentOS and Fedora are supported guest Linux systems.
