Ubuntu Support

Postby ub64 » Mon Nov 02, 2009 7:59 am

I've been running Web Scheduler and then TV scheduler pro for years on XP and then unfortunately on Vista. I've decided to jump ship and move over to ubuntu. Earlier in the year before the windows installer was available for TV Scheduler Pro there were instruction on the WIKI for installing by hand for both windows and linux. I ran some test on the linux version for a while, however all mention of linux has now vanished and I've rebuilt my ubuntu box. Could the files and instruction for linux users please be made available (again)

Many thanks

installing by hand for both windows and linux

Tv Scheduler Pro will not work on linux, it has a large component build in win32 these include the main capture engine etc.

It is true the install instructions were recently updated but they did not contain linux install instructions before, just windows manual install instructions.

Ok. I've worked it out TV Scheduler Pro was once apon a time DVB WebScheduler. There is another derivative of DVB WebScheduler that has been ported to Linux. Which can be found on Sourceforge here http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvb-ws-linux/

Yes that is correct, there are a number of application based on the original source and concepts of Web Scheduler. The whole "Web Scheduler" identity has been so diluted by this that is is usually very hard for the average user to work out what apps are what and how they are different.

This is my fault, I should have been more stringent on the naming of applications, at the time I did not think it would be a problem but with most applications being derivatives of the original "DVB Web Scheduler" it is hard not to get them confused.

Also I take direct responsibility for the "DVB Web Scheduler" to "DVB Web Scheduler Pro" to "TV Scheduler Pro" naming changes, while I think they were required at the time due to the shift from open to closed to open again of the products it does not help.

One thing to keep in mind is that while all the applications use similar names and the base ideas and framework form the original "DVB Web Scheduler" open source project they ALL use very different capture engines and techniques to do the actual capturing of data.

All hail to to the creator "digtv" nee "null_pointer" from where all good things come. May he continue to bless us with more concepts in the future. I wonder if God felt the same way with his creation, adam & eve.....
All the derivatives should have licencing info that directs the user to the original source. I would not get chocked up about it.

Might be a good time to consider modularisation of the capture engine so plugins can be created for different source device and mux output formats.

good idea but the main problem is the current implementation right down to the memory share sink/source filter is all written for win32 and it would be a good idea to go back to the base line and write it from scratch in an open platform way.

One way would be use JNI to transfer the data to Java land, all code in java land would be constant across all platforms but the data source plugin would need to be tailored to the platform and os etc. This is just one idea that would alow reusable java based capture plugins, there are lots of different ways to go.

Yes this would be very difficult but it would allow for the main java base features of TV Scheduler to be updated easily for all platforms used rather than just one at a time. Once you have the java template in place the dll's can then be added as new device types are created.
