Speed in this case results from mechanisms against data collision and/or corruption: If any NXT may send, a TR is slow, but safe. If 20 NXT may send at any time to any member, then other anti-data-collision/corruption mechanisms are probably more difficult to establish but maybe we might have overall a faster data traffic.

+1Tokens can and do get lost, typically when something happens to a node that is holding the token. Hence the protocol has to deal with token loss and recovery, which adds a lot of complexity and code to the protocol.
