Will FreeNAS 0.7 be a last version? [ NO ]

Postby alex-san » Thu Sep 17, 2009 4:57 pm

Hi, people!
I read next message from our Tracker:
Date: 2009-09-17 17:23
Sender: votdev
--- cut ---
Anyway, 0.7 seems to be the last version of FreeNAS as it is right at the moment. For the next version the whole system will be recoded (what i'm doing at the moment). There will be no more embedded installs anymore, also the OS will be Debian.

Regards
Volker

I'm so sad and I'm so happy in the same time. I pity FreeNAS project because now it very stable, because it include the native ZFS support. But I understand advantages Debian-based system. I want to hope the new project ("coreNAS", I think) will be better than FreeNAS.

If that's a joke, it's not funny. If it's not, it's even not funnier, because it'll mean some efforts lost... and what about migrating data from BSD to Debian?

Thank you, danmero and srogovtsev.
It isn't joke, because a next link is https://sourceforge.net/projects/corenas/
Please, look at the developer. I'm sorry...

If you check the FreeNAS Road Map we are close to the Final Line, let's see what's left.

  • Release 0.6x:
    - User authentication I must add at minimum LDAP authentication... For NIS and RADIUS I must check if it's possible (don't know if it's possible to use PAM for samba).

  • Release 0.7x:
    - Migrate to FreeBSD 7.0 (with ZFS support)
    - Testing a new way for configuring/using share:
    1. 'Adding a new disk' will automatically initialize it (format under UFS) and mount it (transparent process for the user).
    2. . 'Creating a share'(create a folder on a selected disk), with user/group/quota property on this share

  • Release 0.8x:

    - Adding monitoring features (SNMP, email alerting, etc..) - Adding other features (I18n Web GUI, LCD, disk encryption, etc...)

  • Release 0.9x:

    - Only Bug fixes, no more new features - This step will depend a lot's about the development of the "geom vinum tools". If this tools is not stable at this moment, I will replace it by 'geom mirror' for RAID 1 and by 'geom stripe' for RAID 0.

  • Release 1.0:

    - The D day! - Lot's of documentation: User guide and developers guide.
No support via PM system - use the forums please.
Running the latest nightly build of 0.7 embedded(i386).

FreeNAS is an amazing project and I am sure it will continue to have life once the development has "stopped". I have mixed feelings about this news because it is nice to see that FreeNAS is almost final but it is also sad to see that there will no longer be profound upgrades made to the system or new features added. I am sure support for FreeNAS will continue and bugs will be fixed when they crop up, but it is sad to see all forward motion slow down in regards to development.

On the other hand, CoreNAS looks like it will be promising and I am hoping it brings over many similarities from FreeNAS... since FreeNAS is so successful and "familiar". The main thing I am concerned about is upgrading... if I would choose to migrate my system from a FreeNAS over to a CoreNAS I am hoping that things will go smoothly and that volker will keep us in mind and make transitioning from one to the other relatively straightforward and easy.

The CoreNAS project was started back in July, so I am unsure why people are bring this up now (apparently it is because of comments volker made). I had noticed the coreNAS project a while back but thought it was just a side-project or the backend of something. I guess reality is striking now that CoreNAS seems to be "the future" of FreeNAS (in terms of it being the next thing that will be worked on and that volker will be devoting his time and effort into).

I am hoping Volker will see this thread and address our concerns and appease us of any anxiety we have. I am specifically wondering how easy (or hard) it will be to migrate from a FreeNAS to a CoreNAS down the road when the time is right. I am also curious to hear what new features CoreNAS will bring to the table and what the advantages of using Debian are (as opposed to FreeBSD). On top of all that, will the services offered be the same? (AFP, BitTorrent, TimeMachine, UPnP, NFS, SMB, UPS support, SSH, etc etc). I am sure the offerings will be similar, but I cannot live without some of those services! :D

Thanks for all the work that has been put into FreeNAS and good luck finalizing the project and moving onto CoreNAS. Best of wishes and best of luck.

I will stick around no matter what

All I can say is, I won't be changing anytime soon.
I love my FreeNAS install.
Volker and everyone else who made it happen have done a fantastic job, but (there's always a but) until linux can handle ZFS properly, I won't be changing.

ZFS was the one and only reason for choosing FreeNAS over openfiler and a coupe of other options available. The ability to quickly and reliably snapshot the entire filesystem was by far the greatest feature of FreeNAS, and I would be completely lost without it.

In all seriousness though. If development on FreeNAS stops, I'll probably be moving to a solaris based setup for my NAS requirements, or maybe back to FreeBSD 8.0 when it's released.

All said and done, Thanks go to Volker and to all the other developers, contributors and supporters for bringing us this brilliant project.

Cheers

AFAIK, there's no Linux-based ZFS implementation.
