Current single, hardcoded Makefile must be replaced with proper build system. We've had minimal discussion about the alternatives in the other threads. I'm about to select autotools. "Some other like cmake" was requested for portability, but I never got answer to my question about what target important for us autotools does not support but cmake would. I assume original request was just mis-informed about portability of autotools. However, I acknowledge that autotools + Visual Studio is not the most fluently working combination (then again, no build system other than VC's internal works fluently with it).
I'll start implementing autotools build system in parallel with existing Makefile. This requires renaming of the existing Makefile under name that won't get overwritten with autotools, so there will be inconvenience that one has to specify makefile in the 'make' commandline.
