About the project
The XHSI project would like to create detailed, realistic cockpit instruments for the X-Plane flight simulator, and maybe for other sims in the future.
The instrument is eXternal to X-Plane, it is a separate program that communicates with X-Plane and is displayed in its own window. It can be on the same computer as X-Plane, or on another computer on the network.
XHSI 1.0 ND: Navigation Display
The first instrument is a Navigation Display, modeled after the Navigation Display of the Boeing 737-NG series, but it can be used by any X-Plane aircraft, even the 1903 Wright Flyer if you like.
XHSI-ND is displayed in its own window, which can be resized, even to full screen. This makes it much more readable than the tiny navigation display in X-Plane's cockpit panel. It can be on a second monitor of the same computer as X-Plane, or on a separate computer. If you have only one computer with one monitor, you can overlay the XHSI-ND window over the X-Plane window.
It has a lot of options, but the default settings are fine for general use: a moving map where you can see the airports, fixes, VOR and NDB beacons that are 40NM ahead of you. Gradually you can explore other range and mode settings. Then on to NAV1/NAV2/FMC source selection, FMS flight plan visualisation, TCAS, DME arcs, holdings, etc...
Just as in the real B737-NG ND, XHSI-ND can display several modes:
For more information about the B737-NG Navigation Display, see the Flight Instruments document on SmartCockpit.com / B737-NG. The Boeing 747-400 and 777 have very similar NDs.
For wonderful real-life pictures, see Christiaan's website Flying Dutchman's Photo Galleries.
Here are a few usage examples:
XHSI-ND 1.0 implements nearly all of the features of a B737-NG Navigation Display.
It could use a more realistic display of the FMS flight plan with:
- active/inactive/modified route
- computed waypoints (T/C, T/D, etc...)
- CDU FIX
- fly-by/fly-over rounded corners
For these, XHSI will have to be tightly coupled with a more advanced FMS than the default X-Plane. This will be studied after the release of XHSI 2.0.
Terrain and weather radar have been requested by a lot of users, but it is very unlikely that it well ever get implemented du too technical hurdles.
XHSI 2.0 is currently in development. It will have:
- Support for several windows for Captain, First Officer and Instructor
- PFD : Primary Plight Display
- EICAS : Engine Instruments and Crew Alerting System
- Optional communication using SCS
- EFB : Electronic Flight Bag showing Airport map and frequencies (ILS, ATIS, DEL, GND, TWR, APP)
- Moving Google map
