TigerVNC is a high-performance, platform-neutral implementation of VNC (Virtual Network Computing), a client/server application that allows users to launch and interact with graphical applications on remote machines. TigerVNC provides the levels of performance necessary to run 3D and video applications, and it attempts to maintain a common look and feel and re-use components, where possible, across the various platforms that it supports. TigerVNC also provides extensions for advanced authentication methods and TLS encryption.

TigerVNC was originally based on the (never-released) VNC 4 branch of TightVNC. More information regarding the motivation for creating this project can be found in the project announcement.

The latest release of TigerVNC can be downloaded from our Sourceforge project page. Self-contained binaries for 64-bit and 32-bit Linux (GLIBC 2.3.2 and later) are provided, as well as installers for 64-bit and 32-bit Windows and a universal binary for Intel-based Macs.

Pre-release builds of the experimental next-generation code can be found here.

TigerVNC is also provided with Fedora 11 and later.

RFB Protocol

TigerVNC currently hosts a "community" version of the RFB protocol specification. This differs from RealVNC's original specification in that it tries to be a complete description of the RFB protocol, including all extensions.

You can view the current version of the specification directly in our repository. This file is in reStructuredText format, which can be converted to other formats such as HTML and PDF.

Additions to or questions regarding the protocol can be sent to the tigervnc-rfbproto mailing list. The archives for this list can be found here.

The project has four mailing lists:

Moderated announcement list for new releases and other important news.
Archive at GMANE | Mail Archive

Support and general discussion list for users of TigerVNC. Please use this list for bug reports.
Archive at GMANE | Mail Archive

Discussion list for TigerVNC developers. This list can be used for patch submissions and other development ideas.
Archive at GMANE | Mail Archive

Read-only list that receives notifications for each commit that is made in the main subversion repository.
Archive at GMANE | Mail Archive

There is also an IRC channel #tigervnc on Freenode. This channel is open to both users and developers. Please note that not all developers are present in this channel, so use the mailing lists if your issue is critical.

Assorted documentation about TigerVNC and development can be found in the development section of the wiki.
