A hackerspace (also makerspace) is a physical space implementing an emergent model for economic activity. It also (importantly) serves as an innovation center for those of technical bent (patterned after MIT's Media Lab). It traditionally uses an ad-hocratic form of governance, but the pangaia project will help form a meritocracy of qualified representation.
The ideal hackerspace has:
- radical tools available for individuals to make things (like 3-d printers, laser cutters, etc),
- a presentation space for people to demonstrate what they're working on (w/hi-res projectors), and
- lots of brilliant minds moving in and out of it, forming a nexus of interchange and innovation
- the Pangaia Project in operation, exploiting the power of Reed's Law to hold and build the momentum of those interactions.
