Maximising and Minimising

Notepad++, like most Windows applications, can be maximised and minimised. It offers various flavours of these which are les common.

Contents

Maximising

Besides the standard maximising, which keeps all GUI elements on display, like the tab bar, status bar and tool bar -, two extra modes are provided:

Fullscreen mode
This modes hides the menu and tool bars, as well as the Windows task bar.
Post-It
Removes all bars, but leaves the Windows task bar apparent.

The two modes can be combined, so that the whole monitor is available for text display.

There is an extra button showing up when in one of these modes. Clicking will cancel the maximisation mode. As a result, in combined mode, clicking the Post-It button will restore to Fullscreen mode, requiring another clic to go back to whatever state Notepad++ was in.

Minimising

Notepad++ can minimise in the standard way or in the System tray. To enable minimising to the system tray using the minimise button, ou need to check the Settings -> Preferences -> MISC -> Minimize to system tray option.

The setting will be ignored if an instance is already minimised in system tray.

Additionally, the -systemtray command line switch makes it possible to start an instance minimised in system tray, once again unless some instance is already there.

Multiple views

Viewing two (possibly identical) documents side by side is possible in Notepad++. This topoc is covered specifically in Multiple Views.

Border size

It may be worthwhile, speciallly at lower monitor resolutions, to reduce the size of the border separating the tab from the edition zone proper. At higher resolutions, some may find it too thin. The value can be configured using a slider in Settings -> Preferences -> Editing -> Border width. The leftmost position of the slider nearly removes the border.
