After installing the drivers from the CD using ndis-gtk and plugging in the adapter, it was successfully initialized by the driver and showed up in iwconfig. After an "ifconfig wlan0 up" it would not appear in wicd-curses however, and dmesg told me that the link is not ready. I also installed firmware-realtek but it apparently doesn't contain firmware for this chipset variant.
