Introduction (MGE v3.8.0)

A Morrowind mod by Timeslip & LizTail

This page contains important information about MGE. Please read at least this page and follow the suggestions mentioned further below. This will make it a lot easier for you to get MGE working, and it will spare you the embarassment of going to the forums and asking about things that everyone knows to be accessible from here with two or three mouse clicks.

What is MGE?

Morrowind Graphics Extender is a project to improve the experience of playing Morrowind. Its main features are:

  • Infinite view distance
  • Enabling graphics features not originally supported by Morrowind, like AA, AF, shaders, etc.
  • Addition of animated grass to Morrowind
  • Remappable controls and freely configurable macros for keyboard and mouse
  • Integration of the Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE), an extension to Morrowind's scripting language

MGE tries to achieve all this without bringing the game's performance to its knees. Typically the performance hit of MGE will be comparable to that of a larger mod, like one that adds several scripted NPCs to a town. MGE is also highly configurable.

However: In its current state, MGE is not a finished product. It is not user friendly. Please do not attempt to use it unless you have some level of computer literacy and are prepared to spend some time experimenting with what options work best (or at all) for you. It may prove incompatible with your graphics card or some other system component; Intel integrated cards especially suffer from problems with distant land.

How do I get all these features?

The guide Installing MGE correctly will walk you through all the necessary steps. After setting MGE up, you may want to look at some other Guides that help you to perform common tasks, like Creating Distant Land, Activating shaders, or Enabling screenshots.

Also, the pages in the Usage chapter contain a complete reference of the program, its features, and its quirks. The sections Troubleshooting and Known Issues provide help if you run into problems.

Finally, there is a Development chapter which describes applications that are a bit more involved, like MGE's MWSE Extensions, and a Glossary which explains many of the technical terms used in this documentation.

About this documentation

This documentation is a work in progress. It is based on the helpfile that was distributed with previous versions of MGE, but which has been removed with the release of v3.7.0 due to being outdated in several parts. This wiki aims to bring this documentation up to date, and although a lot of progress has been made, there may still be pages which contain some bits of outdated info. You are welcome to help - if you see anything that needs correction or that could be improved, then just click on "Edit this page" and change it. Don't be shy, wiki editing itself is very easy, it's only hard to break things - and even if you do, pages can be fixed and reverted with two mouse clicks. So have at it. :)

You can find MGE's homepage, hosted by Timeslip, here:

Current development is taking place on Sourceforge:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/

A good place for asking questions and getting in contact with other people who use MGE is the "Morrowind Mods" Section of the Official Elder Scrolls Forums. Look for a thread titled "Morrowind Graphics Extender":
http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showforum=12

Please do not mail or PM the developers directly, they wouldn't have time to actually develop if they answered every question personally. Asking in the thread mentioned above will also lead to quicker answers since the forum is frequented around the clock.
