Getting feedback from users for feature requests they want
Written by yaplej the 9 Aug 12 at 23:19. Global category: Tracker. New
The Tracker is a great tool for support tickets, feature requests and bugs but lacks any method to get feedback from users what Features they really want.

There are other tools such as IdeaTorrent but that requires installing the app and configuration so its not "ready to go".

Solution #1: Expand the Tracker to allow "upvoting" tickets
Written by yaplej the 9 Aug 12 at 23:19.
You already have upvoting enabled for the project just expand that to the tracker so users can "upvote" the feature/bug or whatever so the developers can see that.

Visitors should not see deleted spam and such.
Written by ddekany the 10 Apr 12 at 21:35. Global category: Tracker. New
Usually users will not even realize those entries are deleted. They just look at the tracker and see a lot of junk, and think the project is not maintained.

Solution #1: The default status filter should be "non-deleted"
Written by ddekany the 10 Apr 12 at 21:35.
The default status filter should be "non-deleted", which would show all items whose status is anything but "deleted".

Tracker items should be sorted and sortable
Written by martindholmes the 17 Jan 12 at 17:20. Global category: Tracker. New
At the moment, when you view a list of items in the Tracker, they seem to be in completely random order. This makes it remarkably difficult to find a specific item if there are lots in the list.

Solution #1: Clickable sort headers for the tracker items table
Written by martindholmes the 17 Jan 12 at 17:20.
I think this would be the ideal scenario:

1. The table of items is presented in descending date order (newest first) by default (assuming no preference has been established as in #3 below).

2. Each column in the table has a clickable header for sorting the items displayed.

3. The Admin page for the tracker allows the project admins to choose a default column and select ascending/descending.

hide "deleted" tracker-issues by default
Written by zmoelnig the 27 Oct 11 at 16:12. Global category: Tracker. New
tracker tickets can have one of 4 states (open, pending, closed, deleted).
open/pending/closed describe states within a normal ticket workflow.
"deleted" however, is an exception (at least, that is how i understand this state), usually assigned to spam, erroneously submitted issues and the like.

what annoys me, is that the default view shows tickets of all states, including the "deleted" ones, though the name suggests that they ought to be "not there".
i would rather have the default view only include the 3 ordinary states, and only show "deleted" tickets upon user request.

(btw, i like the idea that they are archived and available for anybody interested)

Solution #1: provide a default status-filter "all visible"
Written by zmoelnig the 27 Oct 11 at 16:12.
having a filter that displays all tickets that are not tagged "deleted" would make it easier to find things in "valid" tickets.

i would even suggest to make this filter the default one (rather than the current "any")

It's hard to point authors of a tracker item to relevant pages or links
Written by createsoftware the 28 Aug 11 at 09:26. Global category: Tracker. New
When someone submits a new translation, I often point them to my latest builds page after committing their work. Also, if they are asking for help, I sometimes point them to a relevant section in the manual. Since links are not auto-detected, people usually have to copy-paste the link. Far from ideal =)

Group is often used to specify a target version. Non-admins should not specify.
Written by myktaylor the 27 Jun 11 at 00:08. Global category: Tracker. New
When an artifact is submitted by a user, both the category and the group can be specified. In the projects I work on, it definitely makes sense for the user to be able to categorize the bug, but the group is used to specify the target version where the bug will be fixed. Letting non-admins set this field when the bug is submitted just leads to confusion.

Solution #1: Make it configurable
Written by myktaylor the 27 Jun 11 at 00:08.
It would be nice if the group field were just not available when non-admins are submitting an artifact. This may not be true for all projects, of course, so it would be convenient if the set of settable fields available to non-admin submitters were configurable.

Automated tracker garbage postings
Written by jengelh the 22 Jun 11 at 07:27. Global category: Tracker. New
Problem: Since June 2011, spam bots seem to have found project trackers that allow posting from non-logged in users as a target. (e.g. AID 3324359, 3322512.)

It should not be possible to completely anonymous post spam to the tracker
Written by henca the 20 Apr 11 at 19:12. Global category: Tracker. New
The last days my bug tracker for ms-sys has received a number of posts spamvertising web sites. All those posts has been posted by Nobody/Anonymous.

Developer comments
It is possible to disable anonymous posts on your Tracker. From any Tracker page, select "Admin", then select a Tracker. Go to "Update Preferences", then uncheck the "Allow non-logged in postings", and scroll down and click the "Update Preferences" button.

Note that this is a per-Tracker setting, so you will need to do this for each Tracker you wish to disable anonymous posts for.

With that said, this will just completely disable anonymous posts, which is not what the solutions call for. As such, I'm leaving this idea up for voting for different solutions.

Chris Tsai, SourceForge.net Support

Solution #2: Make it possible to block anonymous posts from adresses and networks
Written by henca the 20 Apr 11 at 19:18.
Once the ip addresses of the spammers are presented it might be possible to avoid future spams by blocking anonymous posts from addresses or ranges. It would be nice to be able to block things like:

201.5.138.14
201.5/16
.telemar.net.br

(the above is only an example address responsible for SMTP spam, I don't know which adresses are posting spam to my tracker)

Written by lasom-bra the 18 Mar 11 at 14:48. Global category: Tracker. New

Written by benibela the 6 Jan 11 at 15:12. Global category: Tracker. New
When a tracker item is closed, the option "close comment posting" is checked per default.
This annoys many reporter if they don't agree with the proposed solution, and it leads to perplexity, if there are multiple team members, from which some allow new comments and some not.

Report/Dump of all OPEN to text file, with info and comments
Written by wesleyjohnson the 28 Dec 10 at 21:01. Global category: Tracker. New
Looking at the current OPEN bugs, feature requests, is so slow and time consuming that we only look at a few. What is needed is to download those OPEN entries to our local computer (where we work on the code), in one single large operation. Each developer should be able to do this.
This offloads most of the browsing and rereading to our local computers, which will help with the load on the SourceForge servers.

Solution #1: Text File DUMP of all OPEN items
Written by wesleyjohnson the 28 Dec 10 at 21:01.
Dump to a text file on the developer's computer (as a download), all of the OPEN entries in the Tracker category.
One option must download all, because new ones must be read (by several people) before someone assigns them to a particular developer.
As an option, they can be limited to download "my assigned entries".

The DUMP would include for each entry:
Entry ID number, and possibly a link back to the Tracker entry (copy and paste link from text).
All info fields.
Text of all comments.

The text dump would not include attached files.

This operation is just about the same time and server load as creating the Tracker page. This is enough information for the developer to select a bug to work on, work on the code, search for matching bug reports for some fix the are making, and to find the Tracker entry again when it needs to be updated.

HTML would not be as useful as text because it interferes with searching, and requires different tools to view.
Text can easily be cut and pasted into the developer's current working logs.

Solution #2: Dump new entries and modifield entries since last cookie
Written by wesleyjohnson the 28 Dec 10 at 21:06.
As an option to the DUMP, have a cookie based DUMP where a cookie keeps the date of the previous DUMP, and only entries created or modified since that date are included
in the requested DUMP-by-cookie-date.

Tracker trash
Written by wesleyjohnson the 25 Dec 10 at 06:01. Global category: Tracker. New
We are getting trash entries in our bug reports. They look like cookie data, and one seems to be about Viagra.
We cannot delete them.

Could add another category such as TRASH, and then
these entries can be moved to TRASH.
A real delete function would also be useful.

Bug reports usually contain incomplete information
Written by hofman the 20 Dec 10 at 15:20. Global category: Tracker. New
About 90% of the bug reports I get contain incomplete information, because most people don't know what they should write in a proper report. And getting the extra information is often not possible, or otherwise very hard, and takes a lot of time.

The optional freeform text is NOT useful/sufficient for this, because people don't read that (well, perhaps the 10% that write complete reports do).

Solution #1: Template for tracker items
Written by hofman the 20 Dec 10 at 15:20.
Let us define a template for tracker items (in addition to the freeform text). I.e., a default text for the item. This can serve as a guide to the reporter in writing a proper report including all the relevant information, like steps to reproduce, expected results, actual results, crash reports, samples, sample data, etc. Compare e.g. the bug reports on bugzilla.

I asked for this already long ago, but this request was completely ignored. However, I consider it an essential feature in light of the problems I face. Why is this so difficult?

Solution #2: Submitter specific fields and selectors
Written by wesleyjohnson the 28 Dec 10 at 21:36.
A submitter is faced with bug report fields that look like they should not touch. The fields they cannot touch should be displayed such that they cannot modify them.
Fields that they need to fill in should be displayed with a label that makes it clear that the submitter is requested to provide that information.
Such labeled submitter fields can include.
- Exact version of project [line of text]
- Severity one-or-more of [crash/cannot-perform-operation/wrong-operation/loss-of-data/display/documentat ion/other]
- Which part of project [line of text]

I want my users to know easily how to submit issues
Written by henri_tremblay the 9 Oct 10 at 22:58. Global category: Tracker. New
I would like to use MantisBT as my main bug tracker (I'm sorry but the SourceForge tracker is a bit limited and doesn't suit my needs).

But, it seems that the only way to make that known by my users is to put a custom URL in the support section to tell to go to Mantis.

Solution #1: Add Trac and Mantis to the Support tab
Written by henri_tremblay the 9 Oct 10 at 22:58.
Having a Mantis menu on the support tab instead of in the hosted apps (I wouldn't have guess to look there if I was looking for support on my project).

The same need probably applies to Trac.

tracker item default filtering and ordering is bad
Written by albertzeyer the 2 Sep 10 at 15:00. Global category: Tracker. New
In the SF bug tracker, only open (or maybe open and pending but I think that is not possible) bugs should be shown by default. It is quite annoying that I must change that every time.

Also, the default ordering should be by priority. That is the much more natural ordering.

Not obvious that bug categories can't be deleted
Written by sirlark the 25 Aug 10 at 14:58. Global category: Tracker. New
Users coming from a background with other open source bug tracking systems, e.g. bugzilla, are unlikely to read the documentation regarding the the tracker categories, but will expect things to operate in similar way. The inability to delete a category once created, especially the default category is unexpected behaviour (although documented).

Solution #1: Show instructional notice on tracker/bugs/admin page re deletion of categories
Written by sirlark the 25 Aug 10 at 14:58.
The display of a short warning/instruction message highlighting the fact the categories cannot be deleted, but only renamed, and suggesting that the default category can be renamed to suit a project's own purposes. This could be placed immediately above the list of existing categories for high visibility.

Save time manually quoting issue or comment text
Written by ntrel the 12 Aug 10 at 13:17. Global category: Tracker. New
When commenting on a bug or request report I often want to quote part of the report or of an existing comment, e.g.:

> Shouldn't this work like this instead?

This would form the first line(s) of my comment and I would answer the 'quoted' part underneath.

At the moment I have to perform the quoting myself by inserting '> '. This is not really practical for multiline quotes as I have to deal with line wrapping.
